Welcome to my blog! I’m Eugene Asahara, a seasoned software professional and analytics expert, with an intense career that spans over four decades. My experience includes a variety of roles at industry-leading companies, including a significant stint at Microsoft, where I contributed to the development of SQL Server Analysis Services, among other key projects.
The work on this site is meant to provoke and equip the readers with ideas that are original (at least to me at the time of writing—it’s a huge world) and tested over my intense software development career of almost half a century. It’s meant to be compelling enough to shift your thinking and spark ambitious creativity. I try to be entertaining and use the mildest jargon (jargon is unavoidable for deeply technical topics). This blog site is not about repackaging of the same topics addressed by thousands of content creators. I don’t write towards SEO checklists, trends, clicks and likes, nor contributing to the explosion of AI-generated confetti, nor are these the blog equivalent of TikToks.
Site Theme (ca. 2023 through 2025)
Most of the posts on this site over the past two years (around 2023 through 2025) circles around the fact that LLMs are just a component of intelligence. LLMs aren’t the whole of intelligence. They’re still frustratingly inadequate as a general thinker, but they happen to work remarkably as an interface layer between components that do make up robust intelligence. At a time when simply making LLMs bigger brings diminishing returns, their real strength today is showing up as a competent translator—between people and machines, and between machines themselves. Like HTML or XML, they provide a shared language suitable for versatile integration, but with far more robust parsing and adaptability.
Intelligence has layers built on both mental models and world models:
- Data are senses—thousands of raw signals, like eyes, ears, and touch in software form.
- Machine learning turns data into information—The first step of perception.
- Knowledge Graphs and Prolog encode rules and relationships and provide a deterministic counterpart to LLMs.
- Mental models that let us reason abductively, create through analogy, orient the situation
- Strategy maps, trophic cascades, and other structures beyond ontologies and taxonomies—World models that show how moves ripple through systems, how one change sets off another, and how cause-and-effect unfolds.
Personal
At the time of this writing, I am a Principal Solutions Architect of Kyvos Insights. It’s my job to educate and “evangelize” Kyvos. But I don’t just happen to work there. I’ve been a part of the OLAP world for close to 30 years now and I’m excited about the powerful role it can play in a fully-formed intelligence of a business.
Please also visit my blog page for my current employer, Kyvos Insights, where I write about innovative applications of the Kyvos Semantic Layer.
My most treasured experiences stem from the numerous enterprise-class BI systems I’ve helped implement over the years. Working with some of the world’s largest and most prestigious organizations has granted me unique insights and a holistic perspective on the sector that few can match.
Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by the belief that data analysis should be accessible to all, not just the technically elite and decision makers. Democratizing data analysis—by simplifying and scaling business intelligence—has always been my guiding principle. Yet, I recognize that truly empowering people requires going beyond the basics, rising above surface-level interpretations, and fostering deeper ways of thinking about data and its implications.
